Around Campus

"I do landscape work on the south side of campus. One day I was weeding a flowerbed and a girl walking by said "Thanks." I wasn't sure if I heard her right so I said "Huh?" Again, she said thank you and I said "your welcome" as she walked away. I had never been thanked for doing my job before, but I thought it was so nice that someone would show appreciation like that."

“One day when I was really stresses and busy I forgot to drop off my time sheet to my work, when I went in to give it to the office secretary she went and gave the person who needed the time sheets my sheet even though she had already dropped the rest off.  I felt so special that she went out of her way so that I could get my pay check.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o />
---------------------------- I was setting up the Redefine Service booth of all things and was having a hard time holding up the banner to tape it to the table when a guy ran up and held it for me. It sounds simple and it was only a couple seconds but just the fact that he noticed and jumped right in to help was an example to me of how I can constantly be looking for those little ways to help others.

    ----------------------------

One experience I have had at BYU when someone was especially friendly was when someone I didn't know helped me pay for my lunch when I didn’t' have enough money.  I really appreciated it.

    ----------------------------

I was walking to the library and was still several feet away when a guy noticed me coming so he waited to open the door for me.  It was so little but made me feel so good that he would take that couple seconds out of, I'm sure his busy day, just to open the door for me.
    ----------------------------
Someone redefined service for me today by striking up a conversation with me after Men's Chorus rehearsal. I'd never met him before, but now I know a little bit more about him, and we found that we have some things in common. It's one more friendly face I can recognize both in the chorus and around campus.
    ----------------------------
“My friend got me a spoon.”
    ----------------------------
“In the Cannon Center I often see a student helping another student who is disabled.  He shows compassion, love, and pure friendship.  He is an example of the kind of Christ like behavior we should all strive to emulate.”
    ----------------------------
“I passed Gregory his food and found him a table to sit at when sitting space was scarce.”
    ----------------------------
“Everywhere I go on campus, be it the library or the terrace in the Wilk, other students are always so willing to watch my stuff while I get food or a drink or use the restroom.  It’s nice to know the people on campus are trustworthy and willing to help out a complete stranger.”
    ----------------------------
“I thought it was pretty cool when a BYU Lacrosse player paid for the guy’s food in line behind him in Taco Bell, just for fun.”
    ----------------------------
“I was standing at the light, contemplating a long walk to campus in the snowfall, when a friend of a friend pulled up and offered me a ride.  His class was at the RB, but he went WAY out of his way to drop me off at the Wilk so I wouldn’t be late for work (which, of course made HIM very late for HIS class).  What a GREAT service!! I then had time to eat breakfast before going to work, which made me so happy. J He didn’t’ even know me… he was just nice.”
    ----------------------------
“I lost my phone and someone turned it into the lost and found.  Thanks!!!”
    ----------------------------
“since seeing the redefine service video I have strived to befriend new people every day.  In the words of my new friend, Sydney, ‘it makes the campus seem a lot smaller,’ when you know more people.  I have felt my charity for others increase.”
    ----------------------------
“Well- sometimes in the winter it can be slightly icy or snowy or something and one day I was rushing off to class (shocking I know) and I of course slipped on the ice! It was the kind where you just don’t know what happened they’re down so fast.  Being the person I am, I found it hilarious and was dying laughing and couldn’t stand up, but this guy started laughing at me, which made me laugh harder! Then he helped me up and we both went on our way, but I had a smile on my face and I hope he did because I sure appreciated his service!”
    ----------------------------
“I got free country swing dancing all February! Whoohoo!”
    ----------------------------
“It just so happens on the day my one and only pen ran out of ink, this young, kind, and attractive girl came by our table and gave me a new one.  In fact I am writing with it right now.  A small gesture like this can be very helpful as it was for my and is my redefine service story.”
    ----------------------------
“My roommate wrote me a kind and thoughtful note and left it on my computer with a Charleston Chew and a Twix bar.  It made my day!”
    ----------------------------
“In the SWKT computer lab, the lab assistants showed me how to use the graphing features on Microsoft excel.  This may seem like a small thing, but for me it was huge, because the night before I had been working on that assignment for four hours without much success.  The lab assistants were so willing to help and didn’t make me feel like I was burdening them.  They were amazing.”
    ----------------------------
“someone just redefined service for me by giving me a cookie!! I am so excited!”
    ----------------------------
“Someone slipped on the ice this morning and my friend and I helped her up and asked if she was alright.”
    ----------------------------
“People have seen me walking to campus and given me rides so I wouldn’t be late! J”
    ----------------------------
“Some guy threw away my trash… what a stud!”
    ----------------------------
“Someone stopped to talk to me and asked me how I was doing. Made me happy!”
    ----------------------------
“Because I have a dislocated shoulder, people hold doors open for me and offer to do things for meJ”
    ----------------------------
“My roommate drove me to school at 6:30 because I slept in late, even though she usually gets up at 10:00!”
